The Art of Physics

To many kids, physics is a scary subject. This website is devoted to bringing physics to life in a relatable way, by showcasing its connection to our culture in an interdisciplinary approach to learning.

I look at physics from the standpoint of how it impacts us every day, from the way we think to the way we express ourselves.

I also look at it from a very personal angle, as the grandniece of one of the centuries’ greatest scientist – Lyman Spitzer and what his life work reveals.

Enjoy and hopefully be inspired by physics!

Groundbreaking ideas in physics are reshaping how we see and understand the world—and even time itself. Join me in exploring some of the newest experiments in physics.

In my first-ever comic on the latest scientific breakthroughs, I aim to bring them to life through an interdisciplinary art-meets-science lens to provide a perspective that is relatable to students of all ages, opening everyone’s minds to the wonders of scientific discovery.

I start with the truly mind-blowing Atomic Clock that measures with crazy accuracy. I also have fun with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO. It’s a groundbreaking experiment that lets us "listen" to the ripples in space and time created by some of the universe’s most extreme events.

Check out the comics and my related blogs. Enjoy the fun and learning!

At first glance, art and physics might seem totally unrelated. Some even view them as opposites, using different parts of the brain. Art uses imagination and emotion. Physics uses facts and numbers.

But in reality, both art and physics are ways of exploring and understanding the world. And throughout history, artists and scientists have been inspired by each other, even if they haven't realized it.

This video series explores the vital connections between art and physics, as a reminder of the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to learning and discovery. I hope you’re excited to see just how connected physics and art really are!

Many artists today are closely connected to physics, making science a core part of their works. In this section I provide some of my favourite examples, from multidisciplinary designer Thomas Heatherwick to architect Zaha Hadid, as well as other less known innovators. They are a reminder that physics and art often go hand in hand.

I hope you enjoy my pick of examples and find inspiration in them as much as I have!

We all need to start somewhere… to take that first step in learning.  And physics is no different. With that in mind, I have compiled a few of my favorite online resources to help you learn the basics of physics. I encourage beginners to click through and begin the exciting journey of understanding the world around us… and those already on the journey to enjoy an inspiring refresher.

Memorable Quotes

Be inspired to hear from leaders past and present on what they think about the connections between art and science. I include here a collection of quotes that will get you thinking about connecting the dots across disciplines.
